Where and when was D2862 scrapped?

D2862 was withdrawn in December 1969 whilst based at Lostock Hall.  Subsequently it had an industrial career based at Norton Colliery, Norton-in-the-Moors, near Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire.

The most recent sighting traced of D2862 at Norton Colliery was in June 1976. The Industrial Railway Society in  ‘Ex-BR Diesels In Industry  9th Edition’ record  that D2862 was “scrapped, about April 1979” but gives no further details.

Curiously, a photograph on the internet, no longer present, showed what was stated to be D2862 at ICI, Runcorn in September 1979.  The photograph was believed to have been taken by Murray Liston. There were several other locomotives of a similar design at Runcorn at the time, presumably though, the photographer had reason to believe it wasn’t one of those.
