Where was D2405 scrapped?

D2405 was withdrawn in December 1968 whilst based at Barrow Hill.  The first published disposal listing, ‘Pronounced Life Extinct’, gives its disposal as C. F. Booth, Rotherham. Subsequent listings generally give W. Heselwood, Attercliffe, Sheffield.

The earliest traced magazine reference was in ‘The Railway Observer’ of April 1976 (p.116) which says “2405, withdrawn December 1968 from Barrow Hill, has been reported as sold to W. Heselwood, Attercliffe during May 1969 and to C. F. Booth, Rotherham, March 1970 and cut up in June.  Can any member provide further details of this sale?”  This followed an earlier appeal in February 1975 (p.41) for information about its disposal.  The situation appears to have been clarified in the January 1978 edition (p.12) which says “2405, withdrawn December 1968 from Barrow Hill was sold to W. Heselwood, Attercliffe, Sheffield, during May 1969 (this answers the query on pp.116/7 April 1976 R.O.)“.    

The references do have ‘Zulu’ fingerprints on them.  Perhaps the first reference is because the compiler of notes for ‘The Railway Observer’ had received conflicting responses to the appeal.  A fabricated one from ‘Zulu’ and the correct one from someone else.  The subsequent reference pointing towards the W. Heselwood disposal being the correct one. 

No observations of D2405 at either scrap yard have been traced.  Thus, for now the disposal remains unknown.
